About MeaningsCheck

MeaningsCheck is a small reference site with one job: tell you what a word, abbreviation, or slang term actually means, as directly as possible. No quiz to click through, no ad breaks between paragraphs — the answer comes first, every time.

We started it because most definition sites are built to keep you scrolling, not to actually answer your question. When you search “SMH meaning” at 11pm because someone texted it and you’re not sure, you don’t want a 2,000-word feature — you want the answer in the first sentence, then just enough context to use the term correctly yourself.

What we do

We explain the language people actually run into but rarely see defined clearly: internet and texting slang, abbreviations and acronyms, and everyday words whose meaning has shifted over time. Each entry is organized into one of three simple areas — Slang, Abbreviations, and Word Meanings — so you can browse every meaning guide by the kind of term you’re trying to understand.

How we research and write each entry

Every explanation on MeaningsCheck is written and edited by hand. We don’t auto-generate definitions or scrape them from other sites. Our process for each term is straightforward:

• Start from real usage. We look at how a term is actually used in messages, posts, and conversation — not just how a dictionary lists it — because slang and abbreviations often mean something different in practice.
• Explain every common meaning. When a term has more than one widely used sense (like ASL), we cover each one and note how to tell them apart, instead of picking whichever is most clickable.
• Show, don’t just tell. We add plain examples so you can see the term in a sentence and use it correctly yourself.
• Review before publishing. Every entry is read for accuracy and clarity before it goes live, and revisited when usage changes.

Our commitment to accuracy

We don’t publish invented statistics or made-up “X% of people say this” claims. If we’re not confident about a term’s origin, we say so rather than guessing. Language changes constantly, so this is a living site: we add terms people actually search for and revisit older entries when the way a word is used shifts over time. Each article shows when it was published and last updated so you know how current it is.

Entries are produced by the MeaningsCheck team — writers and editors who research plain-language explanations of slang, abbreviations, and everyday words. We write for the person who just wants a clear, honest answer, in language a friend would actually use, not a wall of jargon.

How the site is funded and kept independent
